Special Request
Dear Family & Friends,
No matter how you may have stumbled on our website, Welcome! I'm sure you can see where we stand as far as the adoption. Other than blogging we are doing just as any other adoptive family would in learning more about the culture of our child. In this case, China! Today as I write this letter, it marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year. I couldn't think of a better time to share some of the knowledge we are learning as well as ask a favor. To welcome and celebrate a new life, there is a tradition in the northern part of China to make a Bai Jia Bei, or 100 Good Wishes Quilt. It is a custom to invite friends and family to contribute a patch of cloth with a wish for the baby. Part of the patch of cloth goes into the quilt for the baby, and the other part of the cloth can go into a scrapbook with the wish for the child. The quilt contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation.
Eric and I would both be honored for you all to participate in our project. We need a 7" x 7" square of 100% cotton, washable fabric. The fabric can be from anywhere: an old favorite t-shirt, a piece you saw in the fabric store and just loved, anything meaningful really. I learned from some fellow blog people that prewashing the fabric is important. Along with your square of fabric, we need a 3" x 5" or a 4" x 6" card with a good wish for Emily and a scrap of your fabric glued to the card. Your wish card can be as simple or as elaborate as you'd like. If you feel creative and want to decorate it, that's great too. Your wish can be deep and thought-provoking or something as simple and fun as a wish for a lifetime of great hair days. Poems, quotes, or anything else that you want to share are fine too. The small pieces of fabric and the wishes go in a scrapbook so Emily will be able to look at her quilt and see who sent each square and read the corresponding message. Please remember to sign your wish and include your city and state.
Adults and kids alike, I'm counting on you to participate! It wouldn't be the same without ya! If you'd like to participate, email me (
marehare7@gmail.com) or leave a comment and I'll get back with you and let you know where to send your square. Some of you already know where to find me. Right now there is no deadline for you to get your squares to me. Please feel free to pass on our info to anyone you feel we may have forgotten or that would be interested in helping. Your thoughtfulness, time, and good wishes mean so much to us and we know it will mean just as much to Emily someday. Thank you very much.
All Our Love,
Eric, Mary, Nathan & Emily
